Just across from Lake Albert and in a town that’s small enough to be a quiet refuge and yet big enough to have all facilities, the Meningie Hotel is a perfect place to base yourself whilst exploring the lower Murray and Coorong.
In one direction it’s just a short, beautiful drive to Raukken, home of David Unaipon and its famous church - both of them are on our $50.00 note - and this country’s only inland lighthouse at Port Malcolm. In another it’s just 20 minutes to the Coorong with its estuarine wonders. For motorsport fans , it’s less than an hour to the new raceway at The Bend.
On the long weekend in June the back-yard is converted into a grass race track for the hosting of the Australian Ride-on Mower championships where highly modified machines reach speeds of up to 80kph!
Inside, where the bar is topped with gleaming red-gum, there is everything you hope to find in a country hotel. The restaurant’s open every night and serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday. The speciality is delicious local Coorong Mullett.
Rooms are comfortable but don't sleep in – you might miss one of the biggest pelican colonies on the river!...
