Take a free tour through the massive Peak Downs Open Cut Mine, operating the third Wednesday of every month. To book, simply call the Isaac Regional Council. You will be required to arrive 15 minutes early to depart from the Isaac Regional Council Moranbah Office on Bachelor Parade at 9.30 a.m. Be sure to pack some morning tea as tours don't return until 1pm. Moranbah is part of the Mining Trail drive and brochures can be picked up from Isaac Regional Council Offices throughout the Isaac region and The Mill Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road, Mackay. The Peak Downs mine was developed in the early 1970s and has a production capacity of nine million tonnes of coal per year! You can marvel at the sheer size and scale of the operation and equipment used while learning about the vitality of this world-class industry from local experts.
